The Shopify Growth Stack: Tools by Stage

The apps and tools we would set up for a Shopify store, stage by stage: store, email, reviews, ads and AEO. Each with a short honest note on what it is good for and when you actually need it.

No affiliate links yet: we do not earn anything from the links on this page today. If that changes, this note will say so and the links will be labeled. See our affiliate disclosure.

Stage 1: Store

The store itself

Get the basics fast and cheap. A clean, quick store converts better than a fancy slow one.

Shopify

The platform. Start on the lowest plan that covers what you need and move up when lower card rates or staff accounts pay for the difference.

When: Day one.

Visit Shopify

Dawn theme

Shopify's own free theme. Fast, clean and maintained by Shopify. Most young stores do not need a paid theme; spend that money on product photos instead.

When: Day one, unless you have a clear reason to pay for a theme.

PageFly

A drag and drop page builder for landing pages your theme sections cannot build. Every builder adds code, so check page speed after you publish.

When: When you run ads to dedicated landing pages.

Visit PageFly
Stage 2: Email and SMS

Own your audience

Email turns one-time buyers into repeat buyers. Set up welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase flows before you spend more on ads.

Klaviyo

Deep segmentation and flows built on your Shopify order data. The usual pick for stores that take email seriously. Cost rises with list size, so clean your list.

When: Once you have steady orders and a growing list.

Visit Klaviyo

Omnisend

Email and SMS in one simpler tool, with ready-made ecommerce flows. A good place to start if Klaviyo feels like more than you need.

When: From your first orders.

Visit Omnisend

Shopify Email

Shopify's own email tool, built into the admin. Basic, but enough for newsletters and simple automations while you are small.

When: Very early, before you outgrow it.

Stage 3: Reviews and support

Proof that sells

Reviews lift conversion on your store and feed the trust signals Google and AI assistants look for. Whichever app you choose, check it can send reviews to Google Merchant Center for product ratings.

Judge.me

Popular review app with a usable free plan, photo and video reviews and review request emails. A sensible default for most stores.

When: From your first sales.

Visit Judge.me

Loox

Photo-first reviews that look good on mobile, common in fashion, beauty and lifestyle stores.

When: When photos sell your product.

Visit Loox

Gorgias

A helpdesk built for Shopify that shows order details next to each ticket. Good support turns problems into reviews instead of refunds.

When: When email support takes more than an hour a day.

Visit Gorgias
Stage 4: Ads and tracking

Traffic you can measure

Set up tracking first, then ads. Use our ROAS calculator to know your break-even point before you spend.

Google and YouTube app

Shopify's free channel from Google. Syncs your products to Merchant Center for Shopping ads and free listings. Read our feed optimization guide.

When: Day one, for free listings; ads once tracking works.

See the Google app

Facebook and Instagram app

Meta's Shopify channel. Connects your catalog and sends purchase events so Meta ads can optimize for sales.

When: Before your first Meta campaign.

Stage 5: AEO

Get recommended by AI assistants

More shoppers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers what to buy. These steps make your store easier to understand and recommend.

Product structured data

Most modern themes output basic Product schema. Check a product page in Google's Rich Results Test and fill in what is missing: brand, GTIN, availability and ratings.

Answer the buyer's main question in the first two sentences of each key page and add real FAQs. Our AEO guide shows how.

How to use this stack

Add apps one at a time

Every app adds cost and often page weight. Install one, measure it for a few weeks, then decide. Our Shopify profit calculator shows what your app bill does to margin.

Free first, paid when it pays

Shopify's own tools and free plans cover a lot early on. Upgrade when the paid feature clearly earns more than it costs.

Selling on marketplaces too?
