The math behind the calculator
Every number comes from what you enter.
- Payment fees per order =
order value x processing % + fee per transaction - Contribution per order =
order value - product cost - shipping - payment fees - ad spend per order - Contribution margin =
contribution / order value - Monthly net profit =
contribution x orders - (Shopify plan + app costs) - Net profit per order =
monthly net profit / orders, and net margin =net profit per order / order value - Break-even orders =
(plan + apps) / contribution per order, rounded up.

Shopify profit calculator: common questions
How do I calculate profit margin on Shopify?
Take your average order value and subtract product cost, shipping, payment processing and ad spend per order. That is contribution per order. Multiply by monthly orders and subtract your Shopify plan and app costs to get monthly net profit. Divide net profit per order by order value for your net margin.
What is the difference between contribution margin and net margin?
Contribution margin is what each order leaves after the costs that come with that order: product, shipping, payment fees and ads. Net margin also takes off fixed monthly costs like your Shopify plan and apps. Contribution tells you whether an order is worth getting; net tells you whether the store makes money.
What payment processing rate should I enter?
Your own rate: the card rate on your Shopify Payments plan, or your gateway's rate. If you use a third-party gateway, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top, so include that in the percentage. Rates vary by plan and country, which is why the calculator does not guess.
Should I include app costs?
Yes. Paid apps for email, reviews, upsells and subscriptions are real monthly costs, and many stores pay for apps they no longer use. Add them up in the app costs field and check whether each one earns more than it costs.
How much should I spend on ads per order?
Less than your contribution per order before ads. That number is your break-even cost per order. To turn it into a target ROAS for Google or Meta, use our ROAS and ad budget calculator.
