How to Advertise on ChatGPT: October 2026 Guide

How to Advertise on ChatGPT: October 2026 Guide

To advertise on ChatGPT, sign up at ads.openai.com, create a campaign in OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager, give each ad group clear context hints, and set up conversion tracking before you spend. Retailers can also upload a product feed so ads are built from the catalog. On October 21, 2026, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads to 26 more countries, bringing availability to 89 countries, and said more than 100,000 advertisers have already run campaigns.

This guide covers what changed this week, how ChatGPT ads work, and a step-by-step setup for ecommerce brands. Every fact links to OpenAI's own announcements and Help Center, or to the news report it came from.

Quick Answer

  • Where ads show: below a ChatGPT response, as one labeled ad unit, for users on the Free and Go plans, according to OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT FAQ.
  • How you buy: self-serve in Ads Manager or through partners. OpenAI says in its October 21 announcement that both routes are open in the new markets.
  • How you pay: impression (CPM) or valid-click (CPC) billing in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, per OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics.
  • What retailers should use: product feed campaigns, which OpenAI's feed guide says "have been among the strongest-performing ads in our program to date."

What Changed on October 21, 2026

OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads now reach 26 additional countries, including 14 more in Latin America such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, plus markets like Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The announcement says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week and that advertisers in these countries can buy through technology partners or self-serve Ads Manager.

OpenAI also said its next phase will add "additional formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities." CNBC reported that OpenAI's ad business hit $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate in August, up from $100 million in March. For a brand selling into those regions, this is a new paid channel that opened on Wednesday.

How ChatGPT Ads Work

The ad unit

Each ad shows an advertiser name, a favicon, a headline, a description, a landing page and an image, according to the Help Center basics article. OpenAI's FAQ adds that it is also testing a multi-image visual ad format during image generation.

How an ad gets picked

There are no exact-match keywords. OpenAI says the system weighs the context of the current conversation, the ad's landing page, title and copy, the advertiser's context hints and targeting, and, when a user has ads personalization on, select signals from their broader ChatGPT use. When several ads are eligible, relevance and bids decide the order.

What it costs

You choose Views (impressions), Clicks or Conversions as the goal. Conversion-optimized campaigns with click billing charge for valid clicks, not conversions. Bids are set per ad group, and for click campaigns OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click.

What advertisers cannot do

OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers, that advertisers get no access to chats, and that they receive only aggregated performance data. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see no ads, and neither do accounts identified as under 18, per the FAQ.

How to Set Up ChatGPT Ads: 7 Steps for Ecommerce

  1. Check that your country is covered. Confirm your market against OpenAI's Ads Manager availability list, linked from the Ads in ChatGPT FAQ, then sign up at ads.openai.com.
  2. Connect your catalog. In Ads Manager, go to Tools, then Feeds, then Create Feed. You can upload a CSV or TXT file, point to a hosted URL or use SFTP. OpenAI's feed guide warns that items expire after 2 weeks, so a hosted URL or automated upload beats a one-time file. Format fields to the product feed specification.
  3. On Shopify, use the app. The ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify syncs your catalog and connects the OpenAI Pixel so commerce events flow to Ads Manager. You can launch from Shopify, though OpenAI notes Ads Manager offers more control, such as budgets of $28 instead of fixed $25 steps.
  4. Build ad groups around one need each. OpenAI's ad group guide suggests grouping ads around a shared product category, theme or customer need, with separate groups when the message or landing page differs. For feed campaigns, use product filters plus custom labels in the ads_metadata field, such as a bidding tier or product line, to split the catalog.
  5. Write specific context hints. Hints tell the system when your ad is relevant. OpenAI's example: "cushioned everyday running shoes for beginners training for their first 5K" beats "running shoes." Describe who the product is for and the situation it solves. Hints are not keywords and do not guarantee delivery.
  6. Set up measurement before launch. Install the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API, add UTM parameters to landing page URLs, and consider connecting GA4 under Conversions, then Data Sources. Keep in mind that spend data can lag 7 to 8 hours, and that ad-review crawler visits may look like paid traffic in analytics but are not billed clicks, per the basics article.
  7. Start with Maximize results and a small test. The feed guide says Maximize results is the default bid strategy for eligible new ad groups. Give it a fixed test budget, compare cost per order against Google Shopping and Meta, and scale only the ad groups that clear your target.

Ads Do Not Get You Into ChatGPT's Answers

This is the point most brands miss. OpenAI's product feed guide says products in an Ads Manager feed "will only be eligible for use in ads during this beta" and "will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations." Paying for ads buys the slot under the answer, not a mention inside it.

Being named in the answer itself is earned the same way as with Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity: pages AI crawlers can read, direct answers, structured data and consistent facts about your brand. Our guide to answer engine optimization explains how assistants choose sources, and a clean catalog helps both channels, which is why the fixes in our Google Shopping feed optimization guide carry over to a ChatGPT feed.

How Seller Splash Helps

Our AI search optimization team works on the organic side: getting your store cited when shoppers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews what to buy. For paid traffic, our Google Ads management work keeps feeds, tracking and bidding tied to real orders, the same groundwork a ChatGPT Ads test needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can advertise on ChatGPT?

Businesses in the countries where OpenAI offers ChatGPT Ads can sign up at ads.openai.com and buy through the self-serve Ads Manager or through OpenAI's technology partners. After the October 21, 2026 expansion, OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads are available in 89 countries.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

There is no fixed price. ChatGPT Ads uses a relevance-weighted, second-price auction with impression (CPM) or valid-click (CPC) billing. For click campaigns, OpenAI's Help Center recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click.

Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?

No. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model, are clearly labeled, and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's answers. Ads appear below a response, not inside it.

Will my product feed make my products show up in normal ChatGPT answers?

Not during the current beta. OpenAI's product feed guide says products from an Ads Manager feed are eligible for ads only and will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations. Organic visibility still depends on how AI assistants read and trust your own site.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not get ads, and it does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.
